Enugu State Police Command said on Monday that its operatives have separately arrested four male suspects for the offenses of armed robbery, unlawful possession of ammunition, and fraudulent ATM card swapping.
The Coḿand also disclosed that two firearms, two live cartridges, ATM cards from different banks, and other exhibits were recovered from the suspects,
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe (DSP), who confirmed the arrests on Monday, said that the State Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has reiterated the firm commitment of the Police to maintain maximum security, law, and order in the State, especially in this yuletide.
The CP, according to him said, "We remain unwaveringly committed to maintaining maximum security and safety in Enugu State."
Ndukwe who gave details of the arrests said, "The Command's Police Operatives serving in Independence Layout Police Division, on 07/13/2023 at about 5 p.m., upon receipt of a distress call on an armed robbery operation, hasten up to Phase 2 axis of Independence Layout and arrested one male suspect, Chukwudi Nweze aged 29, while his cohorts escaped. One locally fabricated pistol was recovered from him."
"Similarly, on 26/11/2023 at about 10.45 p.m., Police Operatives from the Command's New Haven Police Division intercepted and arrested one Chibuike Omeje, 26, along Chime Avenue in New Haven, Enugu. His cohorts escaped, while one locally fabricated double-barrelled pistol was recovered from him."
"In a related development, Police Operatives of Number 3 Police Mobile Force (PMF) Enugu, while on routine stop and search duty along the Enugu/Onitsha expressway, on 06/12/2023 at about 11.50 a.m., intercepted and arrested one Alozie Clinton Chidubem aged 22, and found in his unlawful possession two live cartridges."
"In another development, Police Operatives of the Command serving in Uwani Police Division, working with security operatives of a commercial bank along Agbani Road, Enugu, on 06/12/2023 at about 8.30 a.m., arrested one Aneke Felix Ogbonna, aged 26.
The suspect and his accomplices, who escaped, had unsuspectingly swapped the ATM card of the bank's customer before his arrest.
"Several banks' ATM cards bearing different names were recovered from him, while he confessed to having severally committed the fraudulent act of ATM card swapping with his criminal gang members at large."
""All the suspects shall be arraigned in court and prosecuted accordingly once ongoing investigations into the cases are concluded."
Ndukwe expressed the plea of the Commissioner to the citizenry to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and continue to support the Police with credible information required to further rid the State of obdurate criminal elements.
