The Anambra State Police command, on the trail of fleeing kidnappers at Awgbu, Orumba North local government area of the state, has recovered one AK-47 Rifle with two magazines loaded with 50 rounds of ammunition.
Recall that following the smashing of a notorious kidnap gang on Friday night and rescuing of four abducted victims at Awgbu, Police operatives said they intensified manhunt for the kidnappers who escaped from the scene of the shootout.
Two SUV cars, a Mercedes Benz and a Toyota Highlander, were recovered at the scene and four suspects were apprehended.
Police said that some of the suspects ran into the bush with bullet wounds and called on the people of the area to look out for them.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Tochukwu Ikenga said in a statement on Monday that while combing the surrounding bushes on Saturday, the Police and the local vigilante recovered a loaded AK-47 Rifle with double magazines containing 50 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.
According to the PPRO, the weapon was promptly rendered safe and taken into custody for further investigation.
"The Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye, praised the diligence of the joint team and promised to reward it for its commitment to public safety," Ikenga said.
He stated that the command's special anti kidnapping unit at Awkuzu, Oyi local government area, has taken over the case for proper investigation, adding that the Commander of the unit has assured that it will leave no stone unturned until the kidnap suspects were brought to justice.
Ikenga added that the four male victims rescued from the kidnappers have all been re-united with their families.
