Red Cross elects first female chairman in Anambra

The Nigeria Red Cross Society has elected Professor Charity Emelie as its Anambra State chairman, making her the first woman to occupy such a position in the state.


She replaces Professor Peter Kachi, who held the position for many years..


Other members of the new executive are Ezedigbo Chika Anthony -Branch Vice Chairman, Ifeoma Justina Okonkwo - Legal Adviser, Chizoba Orgu - Branch Development officer, Rev Sr Dr Chrysantus Onwurah in charge of Health & Care, Jude Emeka Ejiogu - Finance Resources & Mobilization andChigbue Ruth Chinasa -Communication & Advocacy.


The rest are Obodo Chukwunonso Ferdinand - Youth Gender & Volunteer, Ilozor Charles Ike - Disaster Management, Ossai Scholastic Ngozika - Finance Resource & Property Management, Okpala Uchenna - Capacity Development and Okechukwu Avusioke - Programme planning.


The electoral committee was headed by the national legal adviser of the Nigeria Red Cross, Dr Muazu Mohammed, who

charged the new leadership to uphold the dignity of the society in Anambra State.


The election was conducted by voice vote affirmation, after a screening exercise that disqualified 12 out of the 24 aspirants seeking for various positions.


Mohammed said those disqualified from contesting the election failed to meet the constitutional requirements, adding that majority of them did not provide evidence of payment for the organisation's membership renewal for the past two years.


In her acceptance speech, the new chairman, Prof Emelie promised to serve Red Cross Society with all her experience and capitalizing on the strength of the team, using all available resources.


Recognizing that Red Cross is mainly for humanity service, she assured of quick response to emergency situations, if any arises in the state.
