Some residents of Awka Capital Territory were on Saturday arrested by agents of the Anambra State government for violating the monthly sanitation exercise.
The state government had earlier declared no movement for people are vehicles during the duration of the exercise and those who flouted it were arrested in different parts of the city.
Those arrested were taken to the Awka South local government area headquarters, where they are tried by the Magistrate of mobile court and subsequently sanctioned.
Government said the action would serve as a deterrent to others to subsequently adhere strictly to the sanitation exercise and its rules.
Authorities of Awka South Local Government Area, Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, Anambra State Waste Management Agency, Operation Clean And Healthy Anambra, and Dobe Awka Ocha who constituted the enforcement team supervised the sanitation exercise.
Speaking during the exercise, the Awka South Transition Committee Chairman, Hon. ThankGod Anagor commended the level of compliance by the people, adding however, that there is room for improvement.
He observed that sanitation and other relevant environment rules and engagement, including proper waste management compliance, have seen remarkable improvement.
He reminded those residing in unclean environment that it is not only unethical, but also poses a significant risk to infection and various diseases.
The chairman further advised residents of the city to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse to ensure a clean and healthy environment for all.
Also speaking, the Managing Director of Anambra State Waste Management Agency, Mr. Mike Ozoemena attributed the success of the monthly sanitation exercise to the level of sensitization and awareness campaign initiated earlier.
He described sanitation as everybody’s business and urged the people to contribute and possibly suggest better ways to support the government’s work towards ensuring a clean and healthy Anambra at all times.
