The Senate has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize a by-election to fill the vacant Senate seat in Anambra South Senatorial district.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the call during Tuesday's plenary while officially declaring the seat vacant.

The Anambra South Senatorial District seat has remained empty since the passing of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah in July 2024.

INEC had previously stated that it was waiting for an official request from the Senate before proceeding with the Anambra South by-election.

During a stakeholders' meeting organized in Awka, Anambra State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Elizabeth Agu, said that INEC was yet to receive the request.

With the senatorial district currently unrepresented, Akpabio urged INEC to conduct the election as soon as possible to ensure the affected constituency has proper representation in the Senate.

Many notable politicians from various political parties in the zone have already indicated interest in the by-election.
