Ahead of the resumption of the new academic session, the Anambra State government has warned parents to enroll their children only in government-recognized schools.
The state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh said parents who ignore the warning should be prepared to face consequences.
The Commissioner's warning came on the heels of the recent shutdown of a school in Awka for not meeting the requirements to operate, including operating in a deplorable environment..
She insisted that children enrolled in unrecognized schools would not be allowed to participate in state examinations, while the parents would be treated as accomplices in any prosecution against the proprietors of such schools.
According to the Commissioner, the stance is in line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo's commitment to ensuring every child's right to quality education.
She said: "Every child belongs to the state and any infringement against a child's right to quality education will be taken seriously.
The government's clampdown on unrecognized schools aims to protect children's rights and ensure they receive quality education.
Parents are advised to make early arrangements and enroll their children in recognized schools to avoid sanctions.
Government's warning is a clear indication of its commitment to maintaining standards in education and ensuring that children receive the quality education they deserve."
