Both towns have consistently been observing Monday sit at home despite assurances by security operatives that adequate security has been provided for them.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the exercise at Nnewi and Ihiala was aimed at checkmating any untoward situation in the two areas, which has been posing serious security challenges on Mondays.
The patrol team that visited the two areas had in its convoy, security and operational armoured vehicles, purposefully driven to encourage business owners and residents to come out and carry out their legitimate activities.
He said that with adequate security being provided in all parts of the state, there is no reason for people to remain indoors on Mondays.
Ikenga said the state Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu used the occasion to commend the residents of Awka and Onitsha and the relevant stakeholders, especially bus driver’s associations and some market leaders, for their resilience to condemn any act that threatens national peace and their resolve to work together to improve economic activities in the state, especially on Mondays.
