Anambra State governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo has finally signed the law that finally ends the existence of Anambra State Newspaper Corporation, publishers of National Light.
With this development, the state-owned tabloid had become history.
“Today, I signed the document repealing the Anambra State Publishing and Newspaper Printing Corporation. This is part of our efforts at reducing government spendings and cutting cost in the face of dwindling revenues."
“We shall continue to work hard to make Anambra win", the governor said on Wednesday.
He said the action was to curb wastage, as the newspaper company was only taking from government and unable to fund itself.
The governor had earlier this year, announced the closure of the newspaper, which was seen as an unnecessary waste of scarce government resources, despite opposition from the staff of the establishment.
Following negotiations involving the leadership of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, and state government officials, all the over 100 workers of National Light Newspaper were redeployed to the Ministries and other agencies of government.
