The Labour Party member representing Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South federal constituency of Enugu State, Hon. Chidi Obetta has showered praises on President Bola Tinubu for signing the South East Development Commission Bill into law, saying that by the action, the president has shown demonstrable commitment to heal the wounds of the last civil war in the region.
Obetta said in a statement made available to reporters by one of his legislative aides, Mr. Okwy Ossai, that with the law in place, a practical implementation of the 3Rs ( Reconciliation, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction) declared by the then military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon, shortly after the war would commence effectively in the South East.
Hon. Obetta, who is the deputy chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Legislative Budget and Research, also praised the leadership of the two arms of the National Assembly, including the Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, as well as South East stakeholders, and their sympathisers, for making the establishment of the bill a reality.
According to him, the bill is a landmark move that promises to revolutionize the socio-economic landscape of the South East region.
He said: "The South East Development Commission is a testament to President Tinubu's commitment to inclusive governance and regional development.
This is a dream come true for our people.
"It would serve as a catalyst for growth, bridge the infrastructural gap and foster economic prosperity in our region.
"The Commission would tackle the region's developmental challenges head-on, address critical areas, such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and human capital development.
"It would also bring about accelerated development, including roads, bridges, and airports, enhanced economic opportunities through investment promotion and job creation, improved access to quality education and healthcare services, empowerment of youths and women through skill acquisition and entrepreneurship programmes, environmental protection and sustainable development initiatives.
"This is a momentous occasion for our region, and we are grateful for the President's unwavering support.
"We pledge to work tirelessly to ensure the successful implementation of the Commission's mandate."
Hon. Obetta called for a genuine collaborative efforts of all South East stakeholders to ensure the realization of what he described as "boundless gains" that await the region through the power of collaborative governance.
