The baby delivered into a pit toilet in Otuocha, Anambra East local government area of Anambra State and rescued alive three days after, has died at last.
The baby, who was rescued and immediately rushed to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka, by the Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Ify Obinabo, died while receiving medical attention in the hospital.
A 20-year old woman from Izzi, Ebonyi State, Nwaedoka Chidinma, who delivered the baby has since been arrested by security operatives because she admitted carrying out the act intentionally.
Although the baby was rescued alive three days after by bystanders who heard its cry from the pit toilet, its pathetic life history ended on Thursday.
Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, media assistant to the Commissioner for Women Affairs said all efforts to resuscitate the baby, including administration of oxygen and fluids with cardiopulmonary resuscitation by the hospital, proved abortive.
The commissioner, Ify Obinabo, who appreciated the efforts of the doctors at COOUTH, advised young adult females to always use protection if they cannot abstain from sex so as to avoid unwanted pregnancy.
She urged girls who know they cannot keep babies when delivered to come to her ministry when they discover they are pregnant.
The wife of the Anambra State governor, Mrs Nonye Soludo, who had hoped that the baby would survive, was disappointed that the baby could not survive.
Mrs Soludo said the society must rise up immediately and take decisive actions if the spate of current moral decline is to be cut down, while individuals and institutions entrusted with the job of societal sanity have to show renewed zeal and commitment to the occupation.
She also called on parents to teach their children more about culture, traditions, fear of God, and common values like the sanctity of life, the value of patience, self-control, hard work, and perseverance.
