Former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi has said that there is nothing wrong for Nigerian nurses to seek for greener pastures abroad.
Obi expressed the view while making a donation of N20 million to St Charles Borromeo College of Nursing and Midwifery, Onitsha on Monday.
Ten million naira each would go to the midwifery and nursing departments of the hospital.
Obi said he is placing emphasis on education and health because they are the currencies with which people will transact business in the future.
According to him, with Nigeria's population of over 200 million, there is no need to restrict people from travelling out of the country for greener pastures, adding that the country should rather concentrate on training more people and allow them to travel since the foreign remittances from them can be a form of revenue for the country
“What we are doing is not charity, but an investment in you. We need to invest in knowledge and health because it is the future.
Investing in you will ensure your greatness. Your profession is lucrative as you are being sought after all over the world.
I have told the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria that they should not deny anybody wanting to leave Nigeria for greener pastures the opportunity to do so because our nurses abroad will remit their earnings back to the country.
Let those who want go out do so and let those who want to stay here do so, as Diaspora remittance is also a form of revenue generation
If you see me going round donating to educational and health institutions, it is because we want to make life better for you all. I came here so I can donate to you.
It is not proper for children not to have opportunity to attend university, and I sit down and use the money I have to add more chieftaincy titles to my name. That is not how to develop the future."
Obi said the next place he would visit on Tuesday will be a hospital in Anyingba, Kogi State because the school needs his assistance to meet accreditation requirement, while he would do a similar thing in Kaduna State on Wednesday.
