UNIZIK professors in intense campaign for governing council positions *Management warns

Professors of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka have begun intensive campaigns to fill the existing vacancies in the governing council of the institution.

The Ambassador Greg Mbadiwe-led council of the university was recently inaugurated and had already appointed Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi as the Acting Vice Chancellor of the university.

However, there remains seven vacancies to be filled, namely four from the university Senate, two from the Congregation and one from the convocation.

It was gathered that some members of the Senate of the university have been lobbying within and outside the university to be elected.

Worried by the development, the management of the university has warned against what it described as unauthorized campaigning for council membership positions

The special adviser to the Vice Chancellor (Information and Public Relations), Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu in a statement on Saturday said: "It has come to the notice of the management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University that certain staff of the university have commenced unauthorized campaign for the impending governing council elections.

The management strongly disapproves of the unauthorized public campaigns being conducted by certain individuals seeking to occupy these vacant positions on the University council.

These individuals have been creating WhatsApp groups and engaging in other forms of public mobilization, which are not allowed.

The University management unequivocally condemns these actions and the activities of these persons to undermine the peace of the university.

We urge all concerned to desist from these activities immediately. The university is committed to ensuring a transparent and orderly process for the election of council members following established processes.

Any attempt to influence or manipulate this process, including unauthorized campaigning, will not be tolerated."

Ojukwu said the management is considering taking appropriate disciplinary measures against those already found to be involved in the nefarious activities, which, he stated, may include disqualification from consideration for council positions.

He urged all members of the university community to uphold the values and respect for institutional processes regarding the council membership elections.
