The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has urged the federal government to ensure that laid down rules and regulations regarding the succession of the office of the Vice Chancellor in the absence of a Governing Council for the university is strictly followed in the selection of the next Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
In a communique issued after a joint campus council election of the Anambra State axis of the association, NANS said it desires that the next UNIZIK VC will continue the relationship with NANS.
The communique was signed by the chairman and secretary of the communique drafting committee of the association, Santos Ikechukwu and Tochukwu Ekuma, respectively.
The association also hailed the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Professor Charles Esimone for his achievements during his five-year tenure as VC of the university.
The tenure of Prof Esimone as the Vice Chancellor of the university will end on June 4, 2024.
The communique read in part: NANS commends and appreciates the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University for his tremendous achievements in office as VC of UNIZIK, and the special recognition and attention he has given to the NANS throughout his time in office.
"In this regard, we call on the government to ensure that the laid down rules and regulations regarding succession of the office of the VC in the event of absence of a Governing Council for the university, is followed strictly in line with the statute and extant law that established the university and in strict compliance with the university autonomy law."
The association also commended the Anambra State governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo for his developmental strides in every part of the state.
"We say thank you for having Anambra people at heart; we will always be there for you and the state and we promise to stand by you on your developmental plans," NANS stated.
