By Madu Obi

Sports writers in Anambra State have urged Governor Chukwuma Soludo to upgrade facilities at the Awka sports stadium, lamenting the collapse of the football pitch barely two years after its completion.

Rising from their congress in Awka, the sports writers noted that the tracks have not been in use, while the pavilion is begging for urgent and comprehensive rehabilitation.

The state chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Mr. Patrick Anaso and the secretary, Dr. Ikenna Nwokedi, in a communique at the end of the congress, called on the state government and the contractor handling the stadium project, to interface with a view to addressing the issues.

It also called on the state government to give Awka City a befitting stadium by completing other aspects of the stadium, including installation of an electronic scoreboard, floodlights and construction of a second pavilion.

SWAN endorsed the second edition of the state's school sports festival, which it described as a flagship programme of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission and commended Governor Soludo for his support for the sports sector by improving its funding.

It reiterated its commitment to partner corporate organisations and individuals in the state to promote sports across board.
